520 |aThe collection contains forty-three drawings done mostly in pencil, pen, or watercolor by Karl Bodmer.|bThese drawings depict various American Indian tribes including village scenes and life, individual portraits, and landscape drawings of their route up the Missouri River. Some of these preliminary studies were executed while on the expedition, but the majority were later done by Bodmer in his Paris studio. Many of these served as models for the eighty-one aquatints that were issued separately between 1839 and 1843 to accompany Maximilian's travel account.
